Kaiser Permanente: Health Connect Essentials

Kaiser Permanente implemented peer-led training to solve for electronic health record (EHR) challenges.

The Challenge

Kaiser Permanente established a peer-to-peer EHR educational program to maximize the effectiveness of physicians’ time and improve efficiencies across the organization.

The Approach

  • Peer-led best practice sharing was used to overcome providers’ greatest challenge (EHRs)
  • 3-day training during which providers had no patient responsibilities
  • Providers received up to 26 hours of continuing medical education (CME)

  • ~4000 providers completed training
  • 96% would recommend to peers
  • ~80% felt it would save 4–5 minutes an hour, roughly 40 minutes a day
  • Benefits outweighed the costs by improving provider efficiency, skills, provider well-being, and care delivery
